Easy as this sounds, it is amazing at the untold numbers of people that arrive for a job interview inappropriately dressed. Although the first thought might be to dress up, nice and neat with a tie and suit, dress and high heels, or business attire, this is not always the appropriate clothing for many jobs.
Just as you would not wear a dress and high heels to work on a farm, neither should you wear such to interview for such a position. You would not wear a suit and tie while driving a tractor or highway building equipment, so chances are you will not want to wear this clothing to the interview. If you are applying to work in a grocery store, the same is true. There have been people who lose out on getting the job simply because they were overdressed for the position. The potential employer most likely will see that this person is above this job, and move on to the next candidate.
The opposite holds true for those applying to enter the business or corporate world. You will not want to show up to apply or interview in jeans and sneakers. The employer will only see that this person does not even know how to dress to get a job. Be sure to be clean-shaven, well-groomed, have clothing pressed, etc.
One good idea, if unsure how to dress for a particular job possibility, is to visit or shop the place you intend to apply for a job. Notice how the employees are dressed for whatever particular job they are doing. If they are in jeans or dressed casually, you can most likely show up for the interview dressed in the same manner and have a good shot at landing the job. If you see dress clothing, though casual, you’d want to show up dressed nicely for the interview. Should you see suits and ties, dresses, professional and business attire, you’d defiantly want to show up to apply and interview in the same manner, nicely dressed and professional looking.
Remember that the clothing does make the person, in the work world. How you dress not only makes that valuable first impression, it shows the employer that you care about making that good first impression. It shows that you care enough about yourself and the potential job to dress appropriately for that particular setting. It shows that you want the job.
